About the STTP

Due to increase in population, changing lifestyles, technological and industrial developments, the requirement of water is ever increasing, while the per capita availability is continuously decreasing. Out of total available water about 60-70% is being used for irrigation purpose. The water use efficiency of canal irrigation is about 40 to 50% due to loss of water for various reasons. The national water policy of India focuses on increasing the water use efficiency and reducing losses using better water management techniques. The Central and State Govt. has come up with a massive programme of converting existing canal irrigation network into pressurised piped irrigation networks (PIN). There is an urgent need of capacity building of the faculty, irrigation engineers, field personnel, technocrat engaged in providing technical service in this sector. This STTP will help all the concerned in understanding the various aspects of planning, analysis, design and management of PINs through series of lectures, site visit, case studies, and hands on experience on softwares (EPANET, BRANCH, WATERGEMS, GIS, Excel etc ).

Objectives of the STTP

  • 1. Identification of challenges in Water Sector in view of climate change

  • 2. To provide insights into the problems faced by the industry/field personnel in managing the existing canal networks; and the challenges in converting existing canal networks into pressurized irrigation networks (PINs)

  • 3. Capacity building of technical human resource involved in planning design and management of pressurized irrigation networks.

  • 4. To motivate participants to understand scale of water scarcity and need of developing effective parameters/ tools/ methods for proper water auditing/ benchmarking/management of water resources projects in general and pressurized irrigation networks (PIN) in particular

  • 5. To identify opportunities of collaboration between academia and industry to undertake advanced training and research in the field of improving water use efficiency through smart management of irrigation facilities.
